For us, romance means the outdoors - reconnecting through drowsy afternoon chats in sighing woodland, murmured conversations in starlit hot tubs or long hikes of wordless companionship. If you’re after a wild romantic moment, you can’t fail if you head north, with romantic getaways in Scotland waiting on mountainsides and loch shores across the country. Here are a few of our favourites.
Bennan offers you a superb romantic hattrick. First there are sea views from its position high up on the hillsides of Ayrshire. Then there’s the outdoor bathtub under the porch, which is idyllic to bathe in when the weather’s good and dramatic when the rain is drumming on the roof above. Finally, there’s the fireplace. Not the wood burner inside, but the actual fireplace set into the outside of the chimney. There are rocking chairs too, so you can sit on the deck by the fire with blankets over your knees and creak back and forth, chatting about how things were back in the good ol’ days.
Unmissable romantic moment: Whisky and marshmallows (it works, believe us) by the outdoor fireplace
Just arriving at The Douglas Boathouse is a fairly romantic experience, as you bump down a track through an old fishing village and see the long jetty reaching out into the water of the sea loch. When it feels like you’re about to run out of road (and you actually are) the boathouse appears on your right, a definite contender for our Place Most On the Waterfront award. The view out of the giant windows is hypnotic and, if you’re patient and lucky, you might spot the local otter coming down to pick over the rocks when the tide’s out. It’s one of the more modern places in our collection, so perfect if you want your romantic getaway in Scotland to be no more complicated than lighting a wood burner.
Unmissable romantic moment: Morning coffee on the balcony overlooking the loch
There’s no reason you can’t combine your romantic getaway in Scotland with a little exploration and if you’ve never been to Dumfries & Galloway, it’s the perfect place to do so. The Secret Studio by its private lochan (a small loch in case you couldn’t guess) gives you all the peace and seclusion you could want for some quality time, but also puts you in the perfect spot to explore the coast. Through the woods opposite the cabin is a short but scenic to Senwick Bay, where seals have been found basking. There are numerous other coastal routes and you can always talk to the owners about taking one of their alpacas out for a stroll as well.

The Bothy Project, in a wooded corner of the wild Inshriach estate, is for couples who like to strip it all back to basics. There’s a bag shower that you heat water for on the stove and hang from a beam on the porch, a cosy mezzanine bed and not much else except trees. If your idea of a romantic getaway in Scotland is all white linen and champagne, it might not be for you, although one of our team has a cherished photo of themselves from a stay there, in which they’re wearing a three-piece suit while holding a glass of prosecco and an axe, so it’s what you make it.
Unmissable romantic moment: Sitting outside watching the stars
The innovative eco design of Brockloch Treehouse gives it a definite wow factor. If your romantic getaway in Scotland is for the purpose of asking a certain question, or you need a really big gesture, this is a great choice. You can hike to the beach, sail on Loch Ken or simply lounge in the floor-sunk bath all day. There’s even a chance to join in with the working of the farm, if that’s your idea of romance. Skylights above the bed make for warm and lazy stargazing, and the surrounding woods are great for a stroll and some quiet time together.
Unmissable romantic moment: Having a lie-in and watching the patches of light from the tiny windows slide across the wall
