Our favourite treehouse stays in Devon

Six and a half metres above the ground, this space has been crafted from reclaimed materials, and yet boasts an entirely novel experience. Miles from the city, find yourself forgetting the daily grind as you bathe amongst the rustling woodland in the outdoor bath, or indulge your inner foodie as you craft decadent meals you wouldn’t give yourself the time for at home – in the well-equipped kitchen. On the site of a working organic farm, you’ll find no shortage of nature here, take a tour of the grounds and retire for the day by a crackling wood burner.

Like a fairy tale, Treecreeper seemingly summons all manner of woodland creatures to her doorstep – deer on the periphery, and red squirrels along the treetops. Unlike a fairy tale, she is not the ugly sister – her sister treehouses and her are all equally as stunning. As for size, and we’re not one to judge, Treecreeper is not lacking. With a spacious lounge/dining room/kitchen, the space feels airy and easy to live in, especially given the modern kitchen, outfitted with everything you’d need to feed two as easily as four. A little further away from the smattering of treehouses that Treecreeper sits in, there’s a river running adjacent, and the most quick-footed of guests will enjoy a picnic in the River Hut on its banks – as it’s first come first served.

The Hideaway’s bigger and no less beautiful sister, The Den is an example of how design is more than simply aesthetic – it’s a standard of living, it’s ease of use, intuitive existing, all within a space so attractive it actively affects your experience. Underfloor heating, and a wood burner make this place a year-round pleasure to visit, reading in the stylish scandi lounge, or cooking feasts in the fully-equipped kitchen during winter. In the warmer months, use the breakfast bar window for fresh morning air with your coffee, share the four-person jacuzzi on the decked space below the treehouse for an afternoon tipple, or make plumes of BBQ smoke waft tantalisingly through the leaf cover.

The stylish heart of an eight-acre patch of woodland, every inch is carefully considered and designed, juxtaposed against the untamed wild it sits in. Once you adjust to not being distracted by the views of rolling hills melting into the horizon, you might consider firing up the BBQ, and work up a convenient sweat deciding between an outdoor bath or an outdoor shower. You’re only five miles to the beach, so close you can in fact just about see it, so if you’re inclined to make it off site, and good luck finding the will, you can hire canoes and paddleboards for the Exe Estuary in summer, and in winter – make use of the good surf that crashes on Dawlish Beach.

Named from Norse mythology, this treehouse revels in thematic brilliance. Each upholstered element of the treehouse is accompanied by a sheepskin throw, making occupying this space an enviable exercise in hygge. A favourite amongst our customers for birthdays and anniversaries, it’s easy to see why – the hot tub area draped in fairy lights, a BBQ area for Valkyrie-worthy feasts, and decking just outside your bedroom to take in the arrival and departure of the sun. Off site, you’re five miles to kayaking on Wimbleball Lake, epic hiking on Dunkery & Horner Wood National Nature Reserve 30 minutes away, and with Exmoor Distillery a 10-minute drive away, you’ll think you died and went to Valhalla.

When we say treehouse here, we sure do mean it. Intertwined with the outstretched branches of an oak tree, its conventional interior will have you forget your locale until you step out onto the decking for al fresco dining, grilling dinner on the BBQ next to the seating. Overlooking the river Taw that flows below, water plays a vital part in the ambiance, and its gentle babble will steer you to the grand copper bath downstairs – and yes, it has different floors. At the exact midpoint between Exmouth Beach and Westward Ho! you’ve a coin to flip choosing which to visit – first.
